(From top to bottom: Shots of Harrison Ford from Raiders, Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull)
I love pulp, and I loved the previous three Indiana Jones movies- but I have low expectations for this one. I think he's just too old, and not in a good way. At least in my mind, pulp characters don't grow old, and they don't start resembling your grandpa. They don't look like they could be on the verge of crying, or wetting themselves accidentally, either. And the trailer that's out is pretty crummy, too. For a second I thought the trailer on Yahoo was a parody trailer, not the real thing. When 1/3 of the movie's trailer shows scenes from the previous movies in the series, it's a bad sign. Also notable is how the trailer doesn't really have Harrison Ford on it for long before it cuts away. His quick appearances in the trailer come across as an attempt to prevent the viewer from seeing that yes, Harrison Ford is painfully older in this film than he was in The Last Crusade. It also doesn't help that they've tossed Shia LaBeouf in there- I know he's Indy's 'sidekick' in the film, but it seems less 'sidekick' and more 'replacement Indiana Jones'. I do like the fact that Karen Allen (Marion) is going to appear in this one since she was (IMHO) the best female lead in any of the Indiana Jones films.
None of this means I won't see it. I'll be watching it the weekend it comes out, but i'm not going in with high hopes.
