Happy happy joy joy!
We took Nara down to Everglades National Park this weekend. I bought an annual pass, since we will probably go back often enough to get our money's worth out of it.
mxlplx took photos, while
unsigned and I walked the dog on the trails there. Dogs are not allowed on the trails, but we snuck her onto two trails, and she enjoyed herself. So much so, that she was actually calm for most of the day. We stopped by Robert is Here (a fruit/veggie/tourist trap/gift shop open air market) to pick up some Key Lime shakes (they have the best shakes in all of Florida!), and see the animal enclosure that's right behind Robert is Here. They used to have tons of turtles and tortoises inside the enclosure, but they were all gone when we visited on Saturday. I have a sneaking suspicion that somebody came by and hauled all of the tortoises away to MetroZoo. Which is kind of appropriate- they deserve to be in a 'proper' environment where they can be tended to by professionals.
But...their absence takes a bit of the quirky from the place. All they had out back in the enclosure when we visited were farm animals- tons of roosters (uber fancy, probably fighting roosters), chickens (also fancy), goats of all sizes shapes and colors, emus and a pair of donkeys that took quite a shine to Nara. One of them kept following her around the perimeter of the enclosure as we walked after Nara licked her muzzle.
By the time we were headed home, Nara was sleeping in the back of my car.
We need to take more pictures of her.
