You could not miss the arrival of Abuelo's car. He drove an old, banana yellow Volvo, that he maintained on his own. The dashboard and the rear ledge (just behind the back seats) was covered with his figurines of saints. Hanging off the rear view mirror was a collection of bells (to ward off evil spirits), and a strange scroll-shaped passage from the bible, in spanish. The smell of countless cigars and sweat permeated the interior of his car, yet it was always clean. He drove like a madman, and he swore frequently (in english and spanish) at other drivers when they irritated him. When my brother and I were younger, this delighted us to no end. It still did when we were adults, and had to drive with him on the rare occasion. As the years went on, the sound of his car was unmistakable- and you could hear it coming toward the house long before it was visible.
